Beakfeeder does not run analytics, advertising or tracking. We do not ask you to register, we do not run comments, and we do not sell or share personal information. The only personal data we hold is an email you have chosen to send us.
This policy explains what happens to information when you visit beakfeeder.com. It is written to describe this site specifically rather than to cover every service a website could theoretically use.
Who runs this site
Beakfeeder is an independent publication operated from the United Kingdom, writing for readers in the United States. You can reach us at hellobeakfeeder@gmail.com with any question about this policy or about information we hold.
What we collect
If you email us
We receive your email address, your name if you give it, and whatever you write. It sits in an email inbox and is used to answer you. We do not add you to a mailing list because you wrote in, we do not pass it to anyone else, and we delete correspondence once it is no longer useful.
If you ask to be added to our email updates
We hold the address you sent and nothing else. Every message includes a way to be removed, and asking to be removed is enough — you do not have to give a reason.
Server logs
Like effectively every website, the server hosting this site keeps automatic access logs. These typically record IP address, browser type, the page requested, and the time of the request. They are generated by the hosting provider for security and troubleshooting, they are not linked to any identity, and we do not use them to build profiles of visitors or analyze behavior.
What we do not collect
Not on this site
- No analytics. No Google Analytics, no equivalent, no visitor tracking of any kind
- No advertising. No ad networks, no advertising pixels, no retargeting
- No social media trackers. No embedded like buttons or share widgets that phone home
- No accounts. There is nothing to register for and no password to lose
- No comments. Comments are switched off site-wide
- No sale or sharing of personal information. Not now and not previously
Cookies
Beakfeeder does not set advertising, analytics or tracking cookies on your device. WordPress, the software this site runs on, may set a functional cookie in limited circumstances — for example if a site administrator logs in. As an ordinary reader you will not encounter one.
The exception involves Amazon, and it is worth being precise about how it works. When you click one of our affiliate links you leave this site and arrive on amazon.com. Amazon then sets a cookie on its own domain so that any resulting purchase can be attributed to us. That cookie is set by Amazon, on Amazon’s site, after you have left ours, and it is covered by Amazon’s own privacy notice, which you can read on their site.
We receive no personal information from Amazon as a result. We are not told your name, your address, your payment details, or what you bought. We see only aggregate reporting: how many qualifying purchases followed clicks from our links, and in which product categories.
Links to other websites
Articles link out to Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Audubon, US Fish & Wildlife Service, state wildlife agencies, university extension services and manufacturer pages. Those sites have their own privacy practices, which we do not control and are not responsible for.
Children
This site is written for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Your rights if you live in California
The California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, gives California residents specific rights over personal information. Those rights include:
- The right to know what personal information has been collected about you, and how it is used and disclosed
- The right to delete personal information we hold about you
- The right to correct inaccurate personal information
- The right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information
- The right to limit the use of sensitive personal information
- The right not to be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights
In practice, most of these have little to do here. We do not sell or share personal information, we do not collect sensitive personal information, and we do not build advertising profiles. The only personal data we are likely to hold about you is an email you sent us. You can ask what we hold, or ask us to delete it, by writing to hellobeakfeeder@gmail.com. We will respond within 45 days.
Residents of other states with comparable privacy laws — including Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and Utah — may exercise equivalent rights by contacting us the same way. We do not require you to prove residency before answering a reasonable request.
How long we keep things
Email correspondence is kept only as long as it is useful, and routinely cleared out. Email update subscriptions are kept until you ask to be removed. Server logs are retained by the hosting provider on their own schedule, typically a matter of weeks.
Security
This site is served over HTTPS. The small amount of personal data involved is held in an email account protected by a strong password and two-factor authentication. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we would rather say so than imply a guarantee nobody can make.
Changes to this policy
If this site ever adds analytics, advertising, embedded third-party content or a newsletter platform, this page will be updated before that happens and the date at the top will change. Material changes will be noted on the page rather than made quietly.
