Everything on this site is general information about feeding and identifying wild birds. It is not professional advice of any kind, and it is not a substitute for it.
Specifically, nothing on this site is:
- Veterinary advice. We are not veterinarians and we cannot diagnose, assess or advise on the condition of any individual animal, wild or domestic
- Wildlife rehabilitation advice. Handling and caring for wild birds is regulated work requiring permits in most states
- Legal advice. Articles describe federal and state law in general terms. Wildlife law varies significantly by state and changes over time
- Advice on structural work, ladders or heights. Where an article mentions mounting a feeder, pole or nest box, you are responsible for doing it safely

Who to call
- A licensed wildlife rehabilitator in your state. Your state wildlife agency maintains a list, and searching for “wildlife rehabilitator” plus your state and county will normally find one
- Your state wildlife or natural resources agency. They handle reports of unusual bird die-offs, suspected disease outbreaks and questions about protected species
- A veterinarian, particularly one that accepts wildlife cases
- Your local animal control where an animal poses an immediate danger
Handling most native birds without a permit is unlawful under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, including birds you intend to help. Time matters in these situations, and a licensed rehabilitator will give you a better answer in five minutes than any website can.
Accuracy and currency
